We Gardeners, A Passionate Lot

Have you ever known a gardener with a glass half empty attitude? People who garden tend to see beyond the day to day obstacles in life. They see things from a different perspective. They are often in awe of the beautiful growth around them.

I once believed that I was an obsessional gardener. The thought of my favorite past time being an obsession carried with it a bit of a negative connotation and left me with a pang of guilt whenever I participated in my much loved obsessional gardening activities. Perhaps I should be doing something more constructive, like housework.

I soon came to realize however that the term "obsessional"was not the right word to describe the way I felt about my gardening. It was much more than the need to participate in an activity over and over again. The feeling was more one of passion, of excitement, of anticipation in participating in this wondrous activity. I am now a guilt free gardener, enjoying every minute of this wonderful passionate feeling:).

Good for you! I too thought I was obsessional but am so glad I'm not. I too am passionate and that's good enough for me :-)

Lovely tulips, I like the ones with two different colors like the ones in the photographs. I must remember to seek those out next year.

What a lovely sentiment. I see myself as addicted especially to growing things and collecting plants. I should say "I'm a plantaholic and it has been 3 days since I last bought a plant...."

I think sometimes we most crave the things our bodies/minds need the most. Gardening is such good therapy! My housework is messed up in minutes, it feels incredibly futile at times (cleaning the house while the kids are growing is like shoveling the driveway while it's still snowing). But anything I do in my garden lasts a while and I get to enjoy the fruits of my labour every day.

Your photos for this post are gorgeous!

This is so true! I feel the same way. I would say I'm also a plantaholic as patientgardener commented on. Beautiful post!

One of my sons gave me a pin that reads: A clean house is a sign of a wasted life.

I feel endlessly guilty about the state of my house, but given the choice between a clean house and a lovely garden (that I get to work in!) I'd take the house every time.

I like "passionate" over "obsessive."
